Have you ever just sat down and tried to grasp the totality of God’s love? As I write this all that comes to my mind is how much God loves me. Sometimes I sit and wonder at the intricacy of the plan to save mankind-it blows my mind! It’s so unbelievable that God already had me and you in mind before he formed the earth (Ephesians 1:4-14), wow! would you look at that.
Let’s break it down; so imagine having only one son and then sending him to become sacrificial lamb to pay the price for a bunch of people that you’re not sure would accept the sacrifice and turn away from their old deeds. See, you have to understand that he loved you enough (too much in fact) that he didn’t consider whether that love would be reciprocated or not- he chose to love us with our filth and all(Romans 5:8). So maybe you read that last line and you feel like “mehn I have done too many bad stuff, how can you say he loves me and he has paid the price for my sins?” Oh yes, I can. God isn’t mad at you, Jesus has been judged for your sake, he bore the punishment for your sins. How you ask? Let’s look at the scriptures **inserts drum roll blows whistle* (all my Nigerians in the house will get it) its story time!
Prior to Gethsemane, Jesus had had the last supper with the disciples and told them that one of them would betray him. They all wondered, who could this be? Jesus wasn’t pained by this because he knew the scripture had to be fulfilled. He broke bread and drank wine with them signifying his body and blood respectively, and according to Luke’s account he said to them “do this in remembrance of me”. Well, Jesus didn’t stop there no siree, he dropped another bombshell; this time he was direct he told peter straight up, you sir are going to betray me 3 times before the rooster crows. Peter was like no way “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” as I read this I could just feel the confidence Peter had when he made that statement if he only knew. So, Jesus goes to Mount of Olives aka Gethsemane with his disciples, according to Matthew & mark Jesus told the others to wait and went further with Peter, James and John. He told them “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me”- just wanted to point out here Jesus had emotions contrary to what some might think, and we see how he dealt with what he felt. He went further without the other 3 and knelt down to pray saying “Abba father, everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” you would think well that is understandable who wouldn’t be scared of death? But you see that wasn’t what he was anxious about, it wasn’t about physical death or the pain and suffering he was about to endure, I mean he had said prior to this time that the scriptures had to be fulfilled. What he dreaded was the separation from his father-spiritual death. From Matthew & Mark’s account, he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping: this happened 3 times by the way, 3 good times! Luke tells us that as he prayed an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him; God never leaves you in times of trouble. He continued to pray until his sweat was like drops of blood falling down, talk about intense! He returned to his disciples and while he was still speaking Judas Iscariot approached with a crowd, dude had planned everything out down to the signal(the kiss) to identify Jesus. Jesus was arrested and the disciples ran for their dear lives, one of them even ran naked *lol*.
Jesus was taken to court, every case needs a trail, right? What is it they say again “innocent until proven guilty” so he was presented to the council. They tried to find evidence but there was none. Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they contradicted each other. Then the high priest asked, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven”. Oh the priest was mad at his reply; how dare he say such a thing, this is blasphemy! in fact, there was no need for further testimonies-he was declared guilty. Why was he so mad? He understood what Jesus was saying, he wasn’t just talking about being the son of God what he literally meant was that he is God in flesh! The people and even the guards mocked him, threw stones at him, spat on him and some slapped him. Ohhh what humiliation, he took all this for us.
